What to expect when preparing for new dentures
Dentures give wearers the comfort and flexibility to eat, speak, smile and laugh with confidence. Whether you’re missing some or all of your teeth, dentures can help provide a better ability to chew food and support the muscles of your jaw and face. While many patients quickly enjoy the benefits dentures have to offer, these dental appliances do take some time to get used to.
If you have to get your teeth removed because of trauma, tooth decay or infection, for example, you may want to consult Edmonton’s trusted denture clinic to learn more about the benefits and procedures involved with complete or partial dentures.
First appointment
Once you’ve committed to dentures, your dentist will refer you to a reputable denturist in Edmonton for an initial consultation and fitting. Impressions of your mouth will be taken to create permanent dentures followed by tooth extractions and other dental preparations during subsequent visits.
Tooth extraction
Once impressions have been taken, your dentist will remove five to eight teeth on each side of your mouth at once. (If you don’t have many teeth left, all remaining chompers may be pulled in one sitting.) The following week, once inflammation and soreness has subsided, you’ll be invited back to extract another set of five to eight teeth, and so forth.
Temporary dentures
Temporary or immediate dentures are a convenient solution for patients who are undergoing tooth extraction and who may feel self-conscious about baring their missing teeth. Unlike permanent dentures, temporaries may need to be relined regularly as bones and gums adjust during the healing phase.
Permanent dentures
After the healing period is complete—which usually takes up to six months—conventional dentures are inserted. Within the first few weeks, patients may report experiencing stiffness and soreness in the jaw, as well as difficulty eating and articulating words; however, most find the benefits far outweigh the temporary discomfort of new dentures. The experienced denturists at Jasper Place Denture Clinic in Edmonton suggest grabbing a good book and reading out loud to practice speaking. Furthermore, it’s recommended to cut food into smaller, bite-sized pieces—especially crunchier
fruits and veggies—and chew thoroughly before swallowing.
Denture care
It’s important to clean your dentures, just like regular teeth, to prevent plaque buildup and eliminate bacteria. For optimal oral health, make sure to properly rinse your dentures after eating, and clean your gums, tongue and remaining teeth (if applicable) before re-inserting them. Brush your dentures daily with a non-abrasive paste and soak them overnight to keep them moist. Finally, schedule regular checkups with your denturist in Edmonton to make sure your dentures fit correctly—a loose or tight fit can cause mouth sores to develop.
